Part 9: Post-Production Inter-titles/ Ident

Today is our last lesson of production work to finish our videos-Crime Dramas!

Well we only had some finishing touches that requires in order to finish our videos. Therefore Hamza decided to change some elements to the current inter-titles.

Whereas, Sameea and I decided to record the ITV1  ident  to our crime drama. i was initially request to record  it by the group. however, it wasn't suitable as  i have predicted when  I was given this role. as a result, i suggested Sameea should take the role instead, which resulted to be successful as i have expected to. this leads on Hamza to edit the ident to our crime drama.



OVERALL, WE HAVE FINISHED OUR VIDEO- 1ST EPISODE TO A NEW TV CRIME DRAMA, this lesson.

Part 8: Post Production-Inter Titles/ Sound/ Ident

Monday, 1st Feb 2010

On Monday we added the finishing touches on our crime drama.

Hamza  edited the inter title as Gerard suggested the fact full names are required in order to be professional like a typical crime drama convention.

Sameea have decided to take forward the feedback based from last week, to film a shot where the police car is on the scene. therefore the police actors will be identified as police officers through the eyes  of the audience in further extend of course.

In the meantime, i was undertaking some research regrading to improve the sound we currently have to our crime drama itself.  i have found another version of 'Prison Break' like a remix song as the clip is shown below as i believe it contains a element of a typical crime convention at a certain extend of course. such as 'beating rhythm' which in my view adds dramatic tone into our crime drama , to draw audience attention towards it. i have considered this aspect from the previous research i undertaken while i was researching for sound i.e. the theme songs from 'NCIS', and 'CSI'-classic examples of  crime drama  however, i thought the other sound employed in our crime that suits the fitness purpose of  sound to be in  a particular crime drama due to having fast-tempo, to provide energetic and interesting atmosphere to capture the audience interest to our crime drama.

At the same time, Sameea went through some ident templates from youtube. We both choice an ident frame, which more likely to suit our crime drama. For example, the bike which has a female actor, this links with the theme established within our crime drama. this is because the female actor symbol the idea of having the main actor as a lady villain .

Part 2: Pre Production- Background Information

For my solo project I have decided to write a magazine feature article for a women magazine. I decided this based from the clarification of my target audience response gained from the questionnaires. I investigated my female respondents were more interested in feature articles, in comparison to my male respondents. As a result, from my target audience responses and analysis perspectives, i researched on magazines aimed at home makers as I believe from my questionnaire responses and analysis, the fact the main and the target audience to my crime drama is aimed at older and mature women, who have experienced marital relationships. Due to the main character in my crime being a female villain.

Therefore, i researched on women magazines, i decided from the research justification that the suitable magazine article for my crime drama will be a women magazine for woman and home. This is because my point of view, my crime drama shows the emphasises on domestic disharmony, although this magazine it not about this issue. However, Women and Home magazine clearly conveys this clarity of domestic environment, which links with my crime drama representation: Reflecting the way women live today.





Woman&Home magazine is a real success story. As the fastest-growing lifestyle title for women, it epitomises a 'brand new attitude' for women over 25. It was the first magazine to echo this new spirit and each month presents a stylish mix of content reflecting the way women live and work today. Part 1: Pre Production- Introduction

Sole project, is the third/ final part of the project itself, which is worth 20 marks. The sole project is an individual work, which must relate to the crime dramas we have produce in some extend of course.

Few weeks ago ... we were given a variety of ideas regarding to possible things we could produce based on our sole projects; the examples are stated below:

From the above examples I have decided to write a feature article on my crime drama –Ground Floor,’ As a I believe it will be beneficial for me to do something written, rather than arty, since I don’t have much interest in it.

Part 7: Production-Editing and Post-Production-Inter Titles/ Ident

Monday, 25th January 2010


On Monday, we were given feedbacks upon the current video footage. The feedback suggestion was that the middle/ end of the footage-when the police arrive require a realists feature of the police officers arrival. Gerard suggested someone in the group should go down the police station and should request the police officers to drive a police car, so we can get a police car to be on the scene to convey that the actors look as 2 police officers.

Hamza input the main title of our crime drama, in the meantime, I have shown the ident that I have written last week. She believed the ident was suitable, and decided to add more detail at the beginning of the ident. As a result, the new ident for our crime drama as stated below:

Part 6: Post Production-Sound/ Inter-titles and Ident

Monday 18th January 2010


On Monday, Hamza continued to edit, while Sameea was in an exam and I was writing an ident for our crime drama.

Hamza edited some music in the crime drama, as we had less time to put them last practical lesson. Such as the middle music when the police arrives ‘Dark’ and the end music ‘Game’. Moreover, he also added a sound effect-child singing, at the beginning of our crime drama, which I thought was really relevant, as it symbolises the good-side of the lady villain like a mother.

While, I was writing an ident, which was suggested to be simple and shorter, in comparison to what I had been written. Then I improved the ident and came up with another ident based upon the feedback.

Up next, on ITV 1, see what kind revenge a lady villain leads in her flat. In the new ground breaking crime drama, here’s ‘Ground Floor.’

In the meantime, Hamza also edited the inter-titles in the crime drama. However, we suggested that it required more inter-titles, as he currently put in three main inter-titles, such as the ‘camera’, ‘editor’, and ‘sound.’ Therefore he needed to put more inter-titles like the producers and actors names for next practical lesson.

Part 4: Target Audience-Questionnaire Analysis

In this section I will analyse and summarise the responses I have found from the target audience respondents on the questionnaires, in order to, find an in-depth subjective views about my crime drama target audience.

I have found by referring to the gender context of my crime drama, that more men watch crime dramas, in comparison to female gender (question 1). Based on this clarification of evidence shows male gender, will have more interest in my crime drama, than female. However, looking from the perspective of whether having female character role in control, all of my questionnaire respondents agreed that female Villain and police officer will add a new dimension as a new a television crime drama. One of my respondent commented as a female audience for crime dramas it will be ‘exiting and good’ (question 4 and 5). Upon these suggestions, I also view that there may be a high-rate of older, mature female target audience for my crime drama. This is due the main character being a female (lady villain).

Furthermore, I believe from asking the question about what themes and conventions of crime drama they prefer (question 6). Most of the respondents selected hostage convention. This conveys that having the hostage theme in my new television crime drama, will be very beneficial. This is because looking from the responses on what were their favourite crime dramas (question 3).I have been given typical crime dramas such as ‘The Bill’, ‘NCIS’, which in some extend of course, does not contain hostage theme. At this point, I also investigated that all three of my respondents has denoted that their favourite crime drama is ‘The Bill’. This particular crime drama comes on ITV 1. In order words, this establishes that ITV 1 is the best to gain board audiences as it presents with classic crime dramas like the ‘The Bill.’ Taking from the account of my crime drama illustrates that larger audiences will have interest of watching crime drama on ITV 1 intuition in the same way. As a matter of fact, based on these two question from my questionnaire responses employs that the hostage theme will be suitable for my new television crime drama on ITV 1.

Moreover, I have considered from my target audience (question 7) that they are all attracted to new crime dramas through billboard posters and advertisements.

In conclusion, I believe upon the target audience responses that the convention-hostage established within my crime drama as well as the chosen intuition ITV 1 suit to be a new television crime drama.

Part 1:Target Audience Research-Crime Dramas

When are referring to the target audience in Media, we look at four main areas of focus:

Key Concepts:

• Audience
• Intuitions
• Conventions
• Representation

The above key concepts will be examined, during this course of writing, regarding to my research I did, and how these research information link into my group Crime Drama-‘Ground Floor’; using the 4 main concepts.

Audience and Conventions:

Audience Case Study:

Crime Dramas believed to take 28% of prime time, as it has been clarified that Crime Drama has become one of the popular television genres within the contemporary society. Crime Dramas are aimed at teenagers as they have more prime time, in comparison to other age groups such as middle and old age people. Teenagers have more social time, in contrast to other age groups. However, one of the reasons why teenagers are the main audience for crime dramas is because Crime Dramas today involves issues, themes and conventions are viewed from the on-going current affairs found within the contemporary society, which are associated with teenagers. For example, drugs.

Audience for my Crime Drama-Ground Floor:

Based on the clarification of the research on the target audience about Crime Dramas, I have decided to have two types of target audience main and secondary audience.

Main Audience:

In addition, my Crime Drama does not relate to teenage audience as I found in my research where most television crime dramas are aimed specifically at. This is due to the narrative content established within my crime drama is complex and sophisticated, therefore required to be aimed at older and mature audiences; who have experienced in marital relationships.

Secondary Audience:

This particular audience may watch my crime drama with some interest of course as time past situation. Single-Parent mothers who have experienced troubled marital relationships. In this is case, single-parent mothers clearly highlights the narrative to my crime drama. For instance, the ‘Lady Villain, a mother of two children from two different fathers have been abandoned from her husband’s, therefore she raised the children alone like a single parent mothers.

Case Study of Secondary Audience:

Moreover, signal parent mothers have increased over the years within the contemporary society due to changing roles within women’s in society today. This demonstrates the viewpoint from the representation employed in my crime drama.

• Criminals and Criminal justice system

• Social Workers versus police
• Victims versus police

Using the research ideas employed from my main and secondary target audience justifications as well as the conventions of my crime drama, I believe from my perspective of REPRESENTATION to my crime drama shows the ideal femininity of changing archetype/ role of women within the society. Such as female being from passive and normative to assertive and ladettes. This is due to women being economic and financially independent. In the case, of my Crime Drama the Lady Villain emphasises to be assertive by taking a revenge on her x-husbands. This reflects she as a female has confidence and power, which is unusual role stated in crime Dramas, as female archetypes are normally seen as passive like victims. In addition, my crime drama takes this female archetype to a new dimension as a Lady Villain, which is viewed as ladettes femininity. This is because she has been portrayed in the crime drama as torturing her x-husbands like victims and been aggressive to them, which are generally masculine behaviours, found in other typical, classic crime dramas namely the ‘The Bill.’

Moreover, my crime drama also indicates one of the key binaries found in crime drama representation. For example, Crime and the Police investigation established.

Intuitions

As a group we have selected ITV as our Channel to our new television Crime Drama. In conclusion, to my thoughts regarding to the chosen intuition for my crime drama, I believe it is going to be the best channel to win board audiences. ITV is a Commercial channel. Therefore, my crime drama audience will mass audiences. As a result, this demonstrates viewpoint that my crime drama focuses on ordinary people. This leads onto say, my crime drama will engage and brings in board audiences, as ITV is part of popular culture. One specific reason is my crime drama presents with two unique roles for female actors. Such as lady villain and a female police officer. As a matter of fact, this makes my crime drama to have unique convention, in comparison, to other current typical crime dramas.

The schedule time for my crime drama to come on is after tea time, such as 9:00 pm, as I already mentioned my crime drama is aimed at mature and older male and female, who have experienced marital relationships. Therefore I believe this time zone suite the fitness purpose for my crime drama target audience.

Part 5: Production-Editing and Post Production Sound/ Ident

Monday, 11th January 2010

On Monday we as group finished capturing the video and added sound in our Crime Drama.

After Hamza finished capturing the video, we decided to put the sound in from my USB, while Sameea was in an exam. Hamza successfully imported all the music and sound effects into the Crime Drama. Then he was continuing to edit the video by improving some shots which was filmed faster than others by Sameea. He also improved some lighting schemes, in order to covey as natural lighting, since it was hard at times to see the characters, and what is going on in the narrative, when viewed the video.

Meantime, I decided to write the ident based on the prior research clarification Sameea and I did in last week‘s lesson, i have done two different idents which are similar in some extend, these are shown below:

Up next, Saturday evening at 6pm ITV presents with more drama than ever! Starting with a new dimension of a ground breaking Crime Drama; see what happens when two x-husbands arrives out of the blue to claim full custody for their children, from their Villain wife at her flat. Here’s Ground Floor.

Friday evening at 6pm ITV is starting with a new dimension of a ground breaking crime drama, where an x-wife as a Villain keeps her two x-husbands in hostage as a revenge for abandoning her years ago...Here’s Ground Floor.

The above stated idents, will be discussed with my group members next lesson, to get second opinions based on them, this will me to either make changes to improve or leave how it is currently.

Part 4: Production Work-Editing and Post Production-Sound/ Inter-titles

Monday 4th January 2010

On Monday it was our first lesson back from the Christmas Holidays.
Before the Christmas Holidays i have undertaken some research about sound choices and selected the relevant music and sound effects regarding to our Crime Drama; stated in the previous blog.

Then during this lesson i went through the sound choices from my blog with my group members. They both liked Prison Break to be the beginning song, as it symbolises the central character-Lady Villain. For the end music i asked which one they thought was most appropriate from the sound list. Eventually, they both believed ‘Dark Pioin’ was the most suitable from their viewpoint.

In the same way, i also went through the sound effects i considered to be useful within the Crime Drama. Such as ‘police Serine’, ‘Slap’ and ‘Foot Steps, which they both agreed on.

After the sound choices review to our Crime Drama; Hamza continued with editing capturing the last footage of the Crime Drama. We both thought that we can do the ident, so we researched some idents, specifically for ITV, as shown below:



However, we suggested that we can write a ident one together, the following lesson-Wednesday, it is not part of a necessary thing to do in practical lesson. After that, I decided that Sameea and me could do some research on inter-titles such as the colour, font-style and size. As a result, this can prepare Hamza to put the inter-titles in, once he has finished with editing the video. We both went on ‘Da. Font. com’ and showed each other the possible inter-title style, which we feel to be good for our Crime Drama. However, it was almost end of the lesson, before we both found appropriate inter-titles.

Part 3: Post-Production-Sound Research

On Wednesday I made a list of Music Research I have undertaken during the last two practical lessons as well as my own time. Using variety of music websites.

upon these research I have decided to categorise them into suitable places within our Crime Drama as demonstrated below with the cilps:

I have decided to choose ‘Prison Break’ as it begins with female voice, therefore, it symbolises our central character-Lady Villain.

The choices of the sound effect was based on the footage I have seen, during the editing process, I believed by adding police serine at the beginning of our Crime Drama, will create a sense of reality of the police being presented within the area-New Town. In this way, it will make more realistic and more sense to the audience when the police arrives towards the end of our Crime Drama. Moreover, the use of slap and the footsteps sound effect will be used to give information regarding to the characters actions. I gained the idea by following a typical Crime convention. This will also develop the narrative and the characters to the climax of the Crime Drama itself.

In order to, develop this climax moment within the Crime Drama, i have decided to put in a fast-tempo of the music when the police arrives, also following the convention from NCIS. This will give the sense to the audience something dramatic is going to appear within the Crime Drama. This will create a tensed and sinister atmosphere for them.

Finally, for the end music I have decided to follow the prior idea of having a female voice, along with fast-tempo of music to leave the audience with a energetic and a interesting mood towards our New Television Crime Drama.

In summary, all these sound categorisations of music and sound effect will support the group to start on the post-production after the Charismas Holidays. Although I to need request and discuss second opinions from my group members about sound ideas. In order to, allow me to make changes, add ideas or leave the ideas how they are currently.

Hopefully, this is my job-role completed within the group now.

As a result, I will start to refer to the Target Audience for our NEW TELEVISON CRIME DRAMA.

Part 2: Production Work-Editing and Post Production-Sound/ Inter-Title/ Transition

Monday, 14th December 2009

On Monday as part of our practical lesson the group and I had continued with editing and sound features.

Sameea had filmed the last parts of our Crime Drama, over the weekend very successfully. As she used the technique of filming each shot individually, so the editing for Hamza could be more easier for him; therefore he could capture the last parts of the onto ‘Final Cut’ more precisely and more efficiently.

Furthermore, I was researching further Music and Sound effects, in order to organise and finalise sound choices; examples stated on Blog 12. As a result, the group could work in a fast pace once we reach to the Post-Production work after Christmas Holidays hopefully.

Although today was our last practical lesson, since we only have one practical lesson a week and it is also the last week before the Christmas Holidays. Sameea thought it will be beneficial for the group to finish editing before the Holidays, therefore, we could start the Post-Production Work such as Sound, inter-Title and Transition; straight after the Holidays. As a matter of fact, this will leave sometime for the Sole Project to be done and completed. To sum up, this will lead onto meeting our Deadline 12th February. So Sameea decided to take her free-time to finish the last parts of editing, from where Hamza left off editing today.

In the meantime, I also stared to refer to opening sequence of variety of Crime Drama and other films, in order to, gain some ideas for the opening sequence of inter-titles to our Crime Drama in some extend, of course. The clips from ‘You Tube’ shown below the research I have undertaken during the lesson.

Based upon the clarification of the research, I have decided to choose white Inter-titles for our Crime Drama. I have decided this from the Art Work produced by Hamza. For example, the title and the logo which also has continued white-colour scheme on it, therefore I believe it is a suitable idea after all. I have also discussed the choice with Sameea, at the beginning of the project, she also agreed it.

Moreover, for the opening title, I have decided to put at the beginning of our Crime Drama after the title appears, while the different shots appears of the flat as well as the location surrounded by it. I have gained this idea from NCIS, in order words, following typical Crime Drama Convention.

In conclusion, to this lesson, I believe we are going to finish the Production Work, this week with the support from Sameea. Therefore we can go ahead with the Post-Production with sound and inter-title ideas collected, while Sameea was filming and Hamza was editing.

We have booked the camera for this weekend, so Sameea could film over the weekend in her friend flat at New Town. In order to, film the last half part of the crime drama,

Improvements to Our Production Work

On Wednesday Sameea and I discussed about further pre-production work, based on Monday’s Production work. From this work we decided to make improvements from it. We suggested that the lighting scheme could have be improved in some extend, for our next practical work (Monday). Since it seems quite dark, in order to see the characters, location at times.

Furthermore, I also thought that the opening of our Crime Drama requires more shots such as high-angle shots, long shots and extreme-long shots. These some ideas I have gained during my theory lesson on different crime dramas we have studied... This is because there are only one shot presented such as a ‘Pan’, l believe this is not enough to capture the audience interest from the initial stage, which I am aiming for.

Moreover, we also decided to talk about the inter-titles to it. I have decided to have white inter-titles, from the clarification of some research I have done previously.

Overall, during this lesson we have made few changes and added other relevant ideas towards our New Television Crime Drama. In order to, help Sameea with her filming session over the weekend as well as preparation for Monday’s Practical Work!

Part1: Production- Editing and Post Production-Sound

Monday 7th December 2009

On Monday we started the production work i.e. the editing within the group for the first time. Sameea filmed over the weekend, which she brought in. Then Hamza the editor of the group started to capture the first half of it. Using the editing software: ‘Final Cut.’ This is non-chronological editing software, which allows working in any order during the process of editing. While, I was researching for the various sound elements based upon the sound requirements we need within the Crime Drama.

With that, I researched music that we need for the beginning and the end of the Crime Drama.

For the music I found two suitable music tracks, using ‘YouTube’. I have chosen ‘Prisoner Break’ and ‘Transformers’. ‘Prisoner Break’ will be played at the beginning of the Crime. This is because this particular music starts with a ‘female voice’, which symbolises our central character, in this case, the ‘Lady Villain’ .At the same time the inter-title will also appear at that moment. Then another music will play ‘Lie to Me’ this was found by Sameea, which I thought it is a good idea too as it follows similar type of fast tempo of music which will create a energetic atmosphere for the audience.

To sum up, I will focus on sound effect for next Monday’s Practical session, because hopefully we will be able to film the last part of Crime Drama, over this weekend. This will allow me to gain a clear understanding where sound effects are mostly required to be.

We have decided to choose a midday setting for crime drama, since it’s a usual setting found in most crime dramas at times. Therefore, this will lead onto to make our crime drama unique as most Crime Drama use night time setting. As a result, Sameea as the director booked the camera for two weekends.

Hopefully, we as group will film the first time during this weekend.

Initially, we had three main roles presented within our group, since there are only three members in the group.

Hamza: Directing
Sameea: Sound
I was the Editor.

However, these roles only applied when we had the idea about drug-dealing within the snooker stated on blog 5. Although, when we had the idea about the Hostage, we decided to change the roles around. The current roles are mentioned bellow:

These changes were made because Sameea was more able to access the location, compare to Hamza and me since it’s her friend’s flat, so, we decided she will be the suitable to be the director. We have chosen Hamza as our editor due to his previous experience of editing and based on the title he produced for the group. Finally, i have decided to sound, since it seems quite exciting and new experience for me to look forward to in the future post-production work.

Part 4: Pre-Production Work-Mise en Scene

As part of the mise en scene I am going to be refer to the following areas:

• Production and Design
• Lighting
• Framing
• Colours


The production design indicates the customs and props.


Customs

The customs for the lady Villain will be dressed casually, this clothing stated below will be used throughout the 3 minutes sequence, in the same way, the two male victims will also be dressed in the same way. Were as, the police officers will be dressed formally, based on the typical crime drama convention such as NCIS and CIS.


Props

The only necessary prop seems to be used according to me is a rope for the two victims to be tied around. In order to emphasize the torture scene to the audience.


Lighting:

For the lighting aspect we are going use 2 combinations of lighting types throughout the sequence. Initially, we will use natural lighting because the setting will be during midday, therefore, this will make the footage clear once it comes down to editing process. However, within the flat itself we decided to use low-key lighting due to fact to build suspense to the climax of the Crime Drama.

Colours:

Colour black will be used too associate with mystery, tensed and sinister atmosphere.
