As part of our coursework (worth 25%), we were told to make 3 minute duration of a new television Crime Drama, in groups of 3 or 4. I was situated in a group of three. I had Sameera (team leader), and Hamzah in my group.
On Monday, we had a brief introduction of the elements we should consider in mind, while planning the narrative. We got into our groups. We all kind of had our own stories, following the style-model of Prisoner Break which is an example of a Crime Drama. With that, Sameera had the idea about ‘a man in a dark room trying to escape, while the police was searching for him...’ Whereas, Hamzah had the thought of ‘a man had escaped from prison...’Finally, I had the suggestion of ‘a police procedural crime drama as part of sub-genre; of a mystery story of crime investigation....’ All these proposals stated above clarifies the group’s determination as well as commitment towards this coursework. This shows the inclusion good sign of teamwork from the initial stage, which hopeful should continue for rest of the coursework procedure...
In addition, the planning scheme of our individual crime drama narratives WASN’T a very successful work as we though in before hand. This was due following the wrong style-model (Prisoner Breaker). Since then, we discussed the fact that it’s going lead into a complicated footage. As its going be difficult to create and structure this particular narrative within the time given. Another issue we faced was to find a suitable location such as an inside of a police station.
Then, we discussed several other alternatives/ themes that are found within crime dramas. This included murder, drug-dealing...Based on those ideas we attempted to make the narratives but wasn’t standard we were after.
****
Later...Hamzah came with the plot of ‘drug-dealing happening within a Snooker Club’. At first Sameera and me we disagreed with it. As the theme of drug dealing is common component found in crime dramas, since we both wanted a theme was unfamiliar, unknown to make this crime drama very dramatic and interesting. However, we did not achieve this, as we went with Hamzah story in the end, since we did NOT have any other alternatives.
Our Crime Drama Plan:
Plot Summary:
A man delivers the package (contains drugs) to the gang in the snooker club. However, the Boss of the gang decided to kill him. As the Boss becomes suspicious about him delivering these drugs to them. While, he is dying he says ‘you are making a big mistake, by killing me. One of you is involved behind this’. With that, atmosphere becomes silence, suspicious and tense between the Boss and the gang...
Narrative Style:
In the Media terminology narrative: is how the story has been organised within the text, also known as plot. This Crime Drama will follow narrative style of a single-strand linear narrative. In other words, our crime drama will have one focus of a story and setting. This will also have a chronological-order of a basic narrative; good beginning, middle and end.
Themes:
• Drug-dealing
• Murder
• Crime mystery (narratives of investigation)
• Hatred
Codes and Conventions following Crime Drama:
When we are referring to these terminologies stated above in Media, it means the elements of genre (type) that helps us to identify where the text belongs. Codes: gives meaning to the audience. Conventions: related to the genre that gives information on: themes, ideologies and narrative itself. Both of these terms act as ingredients to the genre.
In our crime drama pursues the following codes and conventions:
• Villains-Drug-dealers
• Murder
• Victim
• Suspect
• Matriarchal- society; Masculine dominated society (all characters male)
• Set in an Urban City location (inside the snooker club)
Purpose and Representation:
Representation is how the Media constructs about certain group/ individual. These are categorised into three groups: people, places and events.
The representation in our crime drama is going to be negative. This is due to the theme being drug-dealing. The aspect is a common concept found within crime drama. From this clarification, it leads on to say the purpose of our crime drama.
The purpose is to show constructed realties within the contemporary society. Such as drug-dealing eventually leading to death, in most cases, which is an on-going process within the society today. In the sociological term this is known as popular culture. Popular culture: shallow activities contributed by the masses. Therefore, our crime drama will contain commercial messages to the audience, which shows embody of values, morals and ideology behind our crime drama. In order words, we will have inner-meanings, incorporated through the stylist-devices we are going to use...
Location/ Setting:
As mentioned above, we are going to use a local Snooker Club. This is called FRAMES 4SNOOKER CLUB, BORDESLEY GREEN as shown below. The crime drama will be set in the snooker game room, as we have decided to use one setting due to the time given.

On the other hand, the other elements of the planning process are not considered at the moment, the props, customs, sound and editing systems. This is because we are focused on the narrative structure in particular at this stage.
